Absolutely delightful reverse carved intaglio cufflinks with depictions of retriever and pointer dogs in classic hunting poses. Converted from late Victorian buttons the cufflink heads each have a unique and charming image of a dog: These miniature wearable works of art would be adored by any dog lover.
Known as ‘Essex Crystals’ reverse carved intaglios were an endearing trend in the late Victorian period. To create these miniature masterpieces a rock crystal cabochon has as an image carved into the reverse side, the image is then painted leaving a very effective three-dimensional picture. The cabochon is then backed, often by mother of pearl, and then set into buttons, stick pins, and brooches.
