Royal Beauty: The Style and Brilliance of Elizabeth II’s Clothes and Jewels
Part One – 1920’s to the 1960’s
Thursday 4th June, Thursday 18th June or Friday 19th June
Part Two – 1970’s to the 2020’s
Friday 10th July, Thursday 30th July or Saturday 1st August
To coincide with the exhibition ‘QUEEN ELIZABETH II: HER LIFE IN STYLE’, at The King’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace, we will discover how Queen Elizabeth II’s style developed over the ten decades. Over TWO talks, we look at how the outfits were paired with breathtaking historic jewellery, which often had a strategic diplomatic message. A close look at her Dressers through the decades, Margaret ‘’Bobo’’ MacDonald, the Queen’s longest serving companion, Ian Thomas who was a key dressmaker to the Queen from the 1970’s and Angela Kelly who was her dresser for thirty years, all played a significant part in developing her iconic style. We will also consider how the jewellery was chosen, who chose it and did the outfit influence the jewellery worn or was the jewellery the factor behind the design of the dress for each occasion? A stunning array of jewels and clothes will be on offer.

History Meets Industry
The King of Gems – Rubies
Continuing with our look at gemstones and the jewellery industry, this talk will feature the captivating history and romance associated with rubies, as well as the rising investment value of these beautiful gems. The history of synthetic rubies will also be covered, which spans nearly two centuries, transitioning from early 19th-century laboratory experiments into massive commercial and industrial manufacturing. Because fine quality natural rubies were exceptionally rare and highly prized, they became the very first gemstone to be successfully duplicated in a laboratory setting.
Lectures are individually priced at £47* and include tea or coffee on arrival and a complimentary glass of fizz and sandwich lunch after the Talk.
The Gallery doors will open between 11am and 11.15am and the Talk will commence at 11.30am
